A viral video has landed three Gurugram traffic policemen in trouble after they were caught taking a Rs 1000 bribe from a Japanese tourist for a helmet violation. The video, shared on social media, quickly sparked outrage, following which the DCP Traffic suspended all three officers involved.
Once again, questions have been raised over the honesty of the police in Haryana’s Gurugram. A video that went viral on social media has raised serious concerns about the functioning of traffic police. In the video, not only were the policemen seen taking bribes, but instead of issuing challans, they were collecting cash without providing receipts and letting vehicle owners go. This video was not recorded by any ordinary person but by a Japanese tourist, who shared it on Instagram. The matter quickly escalated and forced authorities to take strict action.
Taking note of the viral video, Gurugram traffic police immediately initiated action. The DCP Traffic issued suspension orders for Zonal Officer ESI Karan Singh, Constable Shubham, and HGH Bhupendra. The video clearly showed the policemen demanding ₹1000 from a man sitting without a helmet. When he offered to pay via machine, the police refused and demanded cash. The DCP Traffic clearly stated that the department follows a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption. No bribery or indiscipline at any level will be tolerated. He also appealed to the public that if anyone has credible information about bribes or misconduct involving traffic policemen, they should immediately inform the department. For this, helpline number 9999981800 and email acptraffichq.ggm@gmail.com have been issued. The police assured that the identity of the complainant will be kept strictly confidential.
The video shows that a police checkpoint had been set up in Gurugram. A woman was riding a scooter wearing a helmet, but the man sitting behind her was not wearing one. The police stopped them and mentioned a challan. The policeman clearly said the challan would be of ₹1000. When the man offered to pay via machine, the police refused and demanded cash. After this, the man gave two ₹500 notes, but no receipt was issued. In the video, the man can also be heard saying that many people nearby were moving without helmets, but the police were not fining them.
This incident has sparked public anger. People are saying that if policemen themselves start taking bribes instead of enforcing rules, then how can road safety be ensured? Local residents are continuously questioning the police on social media. At the same time, Gurugram police have said that such cases will not be tolerated at all and strict action will be taken against the culprits.
